Dalla Redazione del TGTassoNews  – On Halloween night, children have fun playing the famous game of “trick or threat”. Dressed up with masks and spooky costumes, they go from house to house asking for sweets or some coins. If they don’t receive anything, they can play a trick on the owners of that house, such as emptying the garbage can in the garden or attaching empty cans to the exhaust pipe of the car. The tradition of this game seems to have originated in Europe in the 9th century AD. when the English called it “Souling”, or “almsgiving of souls”. At that time, on November 2nd, Christians wandered from village to village begging for “soul bread”, a square-shaped cake garnished with raisins, in exchange for the promise to pray for the souls of the deceased. The more “sweets of the soul” a person received, the more prayers this person promised to recite for the deceased of the family who had donated the bread. But there is also an ancient legend which tells that, on the night of Samhain, the fairies used to play some “pranks” on humans, leading them to get lost in the “hills of the fairies”, where they remained trapped forever. The Celts therefore, to gain the favor of the Fairies, used to offer food or milk which was left on the steps of their houses.
