Lullaby is a song written in April 1989 by the band The Cure included in the album “Disintegration”. The Cure was a punk band and the singer was Robert Smith. Lullaby is their most famous song.
The meaning of the song was the subject of discussion. In fact, many people said that Robert Smith wanted to speak about depression and drugs. Then Robert said that the song is about a childhood nightmare about the phobia of spiders. The inspiration for the song came from Robert’s dad that every night told a terrifying lullaby.
In the music video of the song, we see Robert in his nightmare that is in the bed and the spiderman, at the end, eats him. This music video won an Award in 1990 for the best video.
The melody of the song is characterized by a quiet and soft atmosphere and the voice of Smith is low and he doesn’t articulate the words well. In the song, Robert is described like the victim that wants to escape from that room but he can’t, so he covers himself with the blanket. Smith feels he’s the dinner of the spider and he can’t do anything. The spider, instead, is described like a human (spiderman) with all the parts of a human body: legs, head, arms…; the spider, also, does actions like a human: shakes his head, looks for, steals, creeps… . So it’s like Smith is afraid of the spider like he’s afraid of a person.
At the end, he can’t win the phobia and he’s eaten by the spiderman.
